Preparatory Guide

[ The short answer ]

The Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) in Bangladesh conducts a comprehensive 4-day selection program designed to evaluate candidates' suitability for commissioning in the Armed Forces. The activities are structured to assess various attributes, including intelligence, personality, leadership, and physical fitness. Below is a detailed breakdown of the activities over the four days.

Day 1: Screening and Personality Assessment

  • Reporting: Candidates must report to the ISSB Testing Hall by 07:00 hours.
  • Welcome Address: An introductory session to brief candidates about the selection process.
  • Intelligence Test: Evaluates logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
  • Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT): Candidates view a picture for a limited time, then write a story based on their perception and subsequently discuss it in a group.
  • Screening Result Announcement: Candidates who do not meet the required standards are screened out and will not proceed to the subsequent tests.
  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): Candidates write stories based on a series of pictures, assessing their imagination and emotional responses.
  • Word Association Test (WAT): Measures spontaneous responses to words, revealing subconscious thoughts and personality traits.
  • Situation Reaction Test (SRT): Evaluates decision-making and problem-solving skills through responses to hypothetical situations.
  • Self-Description Test (SDT): Candidates provide written descriptions of themselves from various perspectives, offering insight into self-perception and social relationships.

Day 2: Group Testing and Interview

  • Group Discussion (GD): Assesses communication skills, reasoning, and the ability to work collaboratively on a given topic.
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT): A series of physical obstacles that the group must navigate together, testing teamwork and leadership.
  • Half Group Task (HGT): Similar to the PGT but with smaller groups, focusing more on individual contributions.
  • Extempore Speech: The speaker is given two topics on the spot and is expected to organize thoughts quickly and present them clearly within a limited time on the chosen topic.
  • Physical Ability Test (PAT): Each candidate attempts a set of physical challenges individually, evaluating physical fitness and determination.
  • Following the ground tests, about half of the group members attend the Deputy President's Interview.

Day 3: Group Testing and DP's Interview

  • Planning Exercise (PE): Candidates are presented with a problem scenario requiring collective planning and decision-making.
  • Current Affairs Discussion (CAD): An interactive platform where candidates analyze and exchange views on recent national and international events.
  • Command Task (CT): Candidates take turns leading a group through tasks to assess leadership and command abilities.
  • Mutual Assessment: The candidate conducts a thorough evaluation of each individual in the group following their performance, assessing key competencies such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and overall contribution to the group task.
  • The remaining candidates attend the Deputy President's Interview.

Day 4: Final Assessment and Feedback

  • Conference:All assessors convene to discuss each candidate's performance across all tests.
  • Final Interview (if required): Some candidates may be called for a final interview to clarify any observations.
  • Result Announcement: Candidates are informed of their selection status.
  • Feedback Session: Provides insights into performance and areas for improvement, regardless of the outcome.
