Extempore Speech
[ The short answer ]
After the 1 km run and the tea break, the Extempore Speech test begins. The Extempore Speech is generally conducted in English.
At the beginning of the test, the GTO explains the rules and procedures to the candidates. Afterwards, the candidates collect a token one by one from the GTO. Each token contains two topics. The candidate selects one topic according to his or her preference and is given a short period of time to organize the speech. This preparation time should be utilized properly in order to present the speech effectively.
The topic given in the Extempore Speech test may be completely unfamiliar to the candidate. Therefore, it is important to understand the meaning of the topic, analyze it by dividing it into the necessary parts, and present arguments in favor of or against it, as appropriate.
The candidate is required to speak on the selected topic in English for approximately three to four minutes. At this stage, the candidate's self-confidence, clarity of expression, creativity of thought, language proficiency, and speaking style are assessed.
Preparation Guidelines
- Practise delivering impromptu speeches on different topics.
- Learn to organize a topic into an introduction, main body, causes and remedies, and conclusion.
- Acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge on a variety of topics.
- Develop your English-speaking skills and, if necessary, practise speaking in front of a mirror at home.
